Choking or Poison
Read the following scenarios and decide if there is choking or poison. Remember that some symptoms may be the same but choking is very different from poison. Sometimes choking happens because something is poisonous.
1. Jack and Jill love to go hiking. They love to pick mushrooms. Jill knows a lot more about mushrooms than Jack. Jack does not know a lot about mushrooms. When they are in the forest Jack eats a mushroom he thinks is edible. When Jill sees that Jack has eaten a false morel, she calls 911. "I told you to ask me first before eating any mushrooms out here! I know how to identify a false morel!"
2. Students are eating food in a cafeteria. One student eats a piece of chicken and starts coughing. He stands up and holds his hands over his neck. He starts to turn blue and there is a wheezing sound as he breathes.
3. Ben and Jenny are scientists. They work in a lab with many dangerous chemicals. One day Jenny spills a dangerous chemical on the table. The fluid flowed off the table and onto the chairs. Then it flowed like water onto the floor. It smelled terrible and Jenny starts coughing and feeling nauseous. She starts gagging and holds her stomach like she is going to throw up.
