Infection & Contamination

People cook meat because the bacteria in meat can make a person sick. To kill the bacteria people cook meat to get rid of any germs.

If someone has an infection it means the person is sick. If something is contaminated, there are germs on it. Germs can be in the air, on tables, doors, computers, pencils, pens, and coffee cups. Any surface can have germs on it and could be contaminated. For example, in the video, the cutting board was contaminated with the bacteria from the pork.

To stop the spread of infection and to prevent other people from getting sick it is good to stay home when sick. It is important to wash your hands when handling meat or after touching potentially contaminated surfaces like tables, chairs, or door handles. To limit the spread of infection, do not go to work or school if you are sick. Call in to work or school when sick. Stay home if you have an infection or think you have an infection.

It is important to cover up cuts with a bandage to limit the spread of infection. Germs can get in or enter the body through a cut or opening in the skin.
